What You Need to Know

VUSD’s Broadcasting CTE pathway prepares students for successful careers in the multimedia/entertainment industry, with a sharp focus on broadcasting — which includes television and film production. Students (grades 11 and up) learn vital broadcast media skills such as video editing, graphics operation, teleprompter operation, camera work and directing — and establish valuable professional connections in a relationship-based industry.

The program is based at El Camino High School at Ventura College, and consists of two sequenced year-long courses, a concentrator followed by a capstone. These immersive classes take place at CAPS Media in Ventura. Students learn in a class setting that replicates a job, learning all aspects of planning, producing, directing and distributing a TV show. The class puts out a regular production, ECTV, that also runs on the local community TV station. In addition to this valuable “on-set” experience, students serve as crew members for other area TV productions, even utilizing the remote truck and crew for these productions. Students also take field trips to world-class professional TV stations and movie studios located here in Southern California, the hub of digital broadcasting production for the nation and the world.

Students emerge from this hands-on program with a deeper understanding of digital broadcast media and a head start in the ever-evolving and hyper-competitive multimedia and entertainment industry.
