What You Need to Know

VUSD’s Automotive Systems Diagnostics, Service, and Repair pathway prepares students for successful careers in the fast-moving and always-evolving automotive industry. Students (grades 9 and up) learn all the basic systems of an automobile and what it takes to own, operate, and maintain an automobile. Automotive detailing is also covered in addition to the in-depth steps necessary to purchase both used and new vehicles. Students learn what to look for when finding a reputable shop to work on your vehicle and how to avoid scams in the automotive industry. The program is based at Ventura High School and consists of two sequenced year-long courses, a concentrator followed by a capstone.

Students learn and sharpen skills with extensive hands-on experience under high-level direction — and several hours working in an engine lab with a stand-alone operating engine. Students will benefit from respected guest speakers within the automotive industry, as well as partnerships with renowned local businesses like Accurate Auto Repair, Asian AutoTech of Ventura, Avenue Tire, Brake Masters, Buena Auto Care, Concours Motors Auto Repair, DMC Automotive Repair, Dylan's Automotive, Factory Performance, Magnuson Superchargers, Mr. Tire + Service, and Ventura Muffler & Brake Center.

Students emerge from this truly hands-on program with enhanced skills, confidence, and direct, open-road access to a high-wage career or valuable skills to last a lifetime. Each student will have the opportunity to earn their S/P2 Mechanical Safety & Pollution Prevention Certificate. The advanced capstone course is also articulated with Oxnard College to provide college credits — and includes the opportunity to participate in a 10-week internship with a local automotive business. Students in this valuable pathway are prepared to earn an Associates Degree at Ventura or Oxnard College in a program that is custom-geared toward entrance into the automotive workforce.
